Restaurant owners don’t usually know it, but staff meetings are a thing that no employee looks forward to. The meeting usually begins with people getting scolded for mistakes, followed by a reminder to everyone that the performance of the staff is below expectations. So much for a pep talk.
If you want to bring out the best in your restaurant staff, spend a couple of minutes setting up a good tone for those staff meetings. It may not mean a lot to you, but the people who work for you will appreciate it. The monotonous nature of the job and pressure to perform will take its toll, even to the most hardworking employee. Setting an optimistic and fun approach to your staff meeting does a lot of wonders.
One of the things that restaurant owners should do to bring out the best from their employees is to encourage friendly and healthy competition. You can introduce a reward system in the next staff meeting where you tell them that the person who gets the most positive feedback or comment cards will earn a reward by the end of the month.
The reward does not have to be cash. You can be creative with it, like for instance giving away a gift certificate, extended days off, or movie tickets.
Don’t Be Cheap
As much as possible, avoid being overly cheap. As much as you want to maximize your revenues, you can’t do it at the expense of the people who are considered the frontline of your business. Don’t forget that they are responsible for serving customers and dealing with unpleasant ones. So, the best motivation you can give them is reasonable compensation and easy technology to enter orders. In other words, pay them the money they deserve. That’s how you keep them motivated to work hard on your behalf.
